Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. 2Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. 3For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. 4And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.
To set means to put something somewhere, Paul is telling us to set our hearts on heaven. The 1st thing is that it is a deliberate action; you have to set it, no one will do it for you. The average Christian is not thinking about heaven or eternity, many of us are even scared to read the book of Revelations and thus we can’t describe what heaven looks like or what happens there.
We are to think about heaven, the way we think about relocating or going on vacation to an exotic country. We are to yearn for it and hold it in honor in our hearts. Because we have died to this world in Christ. Be as earnest about heaven as you are about things on this perishing earth.
Paul does not mean that we should never think the things upon the earth, but that these should not be our aim, our goal, our master. The Christian has to keep his feet upon the earth, but his head in the heavens. He must be heavenly-minded here on earth and so help to make earth like heaven - Robertson’s NT Word Pictures
It’s like being in a long distance relationship; you are thinking about your beloved and when you can be with him. You cherish the future reality more than your current state. You are looking forward to when you can be with him and be at home with him. We need to be actively anticipating and yearning for the 2nd coming of Jesus and heaven.
