In the month of November 2019, we began a verse by verse study of the Book of Colossians, this is a review of Day 2: Colossians 1: 3-8 done by our founder, Omotayo B. Adeoye. You can download the full study on her website Biblestudynote.com
3We always pray for you, and we give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 4For we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and your love for all of God’s people, 5which come from your confident hope of what God has reserved for you in heaven. You have had this expectation ever since you first heard the truth of the Good News. 6This same Good News that came to you is going out all over the world. It is bearing fruit everywhere by changing lives, just as it changed your lives from the day you first heard and understood the truth about God’s wonderful grace. 7You learned about the Good News from Epaphras, our beloved co-worker. He is Christ’s faithful servant, and he is helping us on your behalf. 8He has told us about the love for others that the Holy Spirit has given you.
VS 3 - ‘We always pray for you’ This tells me that as a minister of the gospel, I ought to always pray for the people to which I am sent. The Albert Barnes commentary had this to say;
“his remarkable interest in a church which he had never seen, and it shows that Paul was a man of prayer; praying not for his friends and kindred only, but for those whom he had never seen. If with the same intensity of prayer all Christians, and Christian ministers, would remember the churches, what a different aspect would the Christian church soon assume”
We ought to pray for one other, even those who haven’t seen or met before.
VS 5 - What is the confident hope this people had? What was reserved for them in heaven?
1Pe 1:4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
For every one of us, there is an inheritance laid up for us in heaven. We have the hope of eternal life, of resurrection, of ruling on this earth with Christ at the end of ages. We know that we have a place reserved for us in heaven and we would be with Christ forever, in a place where there will be no more pain, tears or hurt.
The knowledge of this hope which was shared with them at salvation spurred them to love other people and to live changed lives
How is the knowledge of this hope affecting your life now?
VS 6 - The hearing of the good news produces a changed life. Immediately someone gets born again, the life change process begins. Someone who claims to be born again without any form of life change/transformation should be doubted.
When did you get born again? Can you point out 3 distinct changes in your life since you got born again?
VS 8 - The HolySpirit gave them a love for others. This love must be crucial. This makes a worthy prayer point.
Holy Spirit, give me a genuine love for others. Help me to love them like you and look out for their good genuinely. Amen
