How to build a solid relationship with God

Text: James 4: 1- 10

James 4:8 Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.

This scripture is talking to people who are struggling for things a.k.a hustling which is all of us and which is the main reason a lot of people have for not spending time with God. This shows that getting something from God shouldn’t be outside of a relationship with him.

A relationship with God or the absence of it shows where your loyalty lies.

  1. What is it? What does a relationship with God look like?
    • A relationship with God is actually just a relationship
    • Think of a relationship with God like a relationship with your husband but deeper (Use analogy of a marriage, naked and unashamed)
    • It is built on trust and love which grow and develop as you relate and spend time with that person. The reason many of us don’t feel connected with God is because we don’t spend that time (Jeremiah 29:13). Just like any relationship, you need time to build your relationship with God. The amazing thing is that we have forever. This is a relationship that nothing in the world can cause to end (Romans 8:38-39)
    • It is totally up to you. God will not force you to develop one with him. You hold the start and stop key to that relationship. It is yours to maintain (Revelation 3:20) You can get born again and be a Christian without knowing God. KNowing God is far beyond becoming a Christian
    • Examples of Jesus’ relationship with God (John 5:30)
  1. Why you should have a relationship with God
    • That’s the plan of salvation, the end goal (John 3:16-17, John 17:3) Getting born again is not enough alone, you need a relationship
    • That’s how you come to have everything God planned for you in this new life (2peter 1:3)
  2. How to develop one (Ephesians 3:16-19)
    • Get to know God.(Romans 10:17) you can’t trust and love someone you do not know. Some noteworthy things to know
      1. He will never leave you (Heb 13:5-6)
      2. You can do anything with God, his goal is not to limit you or stop you in anyway (LUke 1:37, Phil 4:13)
      3. He has a wonderful plan for your life (Jer 29:11)
    • Talk to God like you are talking to a real person
    • Show up every day
  3. Common issues with having a relationship with God
    • I don’t feel anything – we only develop a relationship with God by faith not by feelings. You don’t need to feel anything simply obey and trust  (John 4:24, Heb 11:6,
    • I feel judged or condemned or unworthy (Col 1:22-23)
    • I don’t have time
    • I don’t know what to say or do (Romans 8:26)
